2. September 2009 Back along the Savannah Way

We have been travelling back west along the Savannah Way. This is pretty much the same way as Simon and Marianne took a few weeks ago but I can assure you, it’s never the same. This time round we spotted quite a few jackaroos moving cattle.

We spend a night of great bushcamping in Gregory Downs right next to the river where we even could swim. To celebrate this great spot we even made pancakes on the fire for breakfast.

We diverted from our original plan because a lovely guy at the tourist information in Crydon suggested that we go to Lawn Hill National Park for a few days. On the way there we encountered a huge swarm of grasshoppers. When we got to Lawn Hill they where sitting in all the trees and they where eating away all the palms.

25. August 2009 Cape York – The Old Telegraph Track

At Bramwell Junction the Road splits into the Old Telegraph Track, which is considered as quite difficult, and the Bypass Road. The first hundred kilometre we followed the Bypass Road before turning back onto the Old Telegraph Track just after the Gunshot Creek Bypass. This part of the Old Telegraph Track is not too difficult to drive beside of the river crossing at Cockatoo Creek. But even this obstacle we tackled successfully. It was actually quite a bit of fun.

We stopped at Fruit Bat Falls before we had a break tor lunch at Eliot and Twin Falls. We enjoyed to scenery and went for a refreshing swim before we headed south again.

Heading north from Cairns our first stop was the Daintree National Park with its beautiful beaches und lush rainforest. From Cape Tribulation we headed over the Blumfield Track to Cooktown. Patrick got his first lesson in 4WDing and he was heaving a lot of fun. He even managed a few smaller river crossings.

In Cooktown we stoped to restock our supplies before we travelled to Lakefield National Park where we spend two days driving and bush camping before continue our journey north to the top of the cape.

It was quite amazing to see how much the landscape changed as soon as we got closer to Carins. All on a sudden the brown grass got replaced with green rainforest. There is plenty of water and everything is very lush and green.

In Cairns we met up with Judith and Patrick who are on their trip around the world. We have spent a few lovely days in Cairns exploring the surrounding before Simon flies back to Sydney.
